FEES Procedure
FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing) is a specialized procedure used to assess how your child swallows. FEES allows our speech-language pathologists to observe the structures and function of the throat in real-time using a small, flexible camera. This helps us identify any underlying anatomical or functional issues affecting your child’s ability to eat or swallow safely. FEES is a safe, well-tolerated, and highly effective tool for customizing therapy plans and guiding next steps in your child’s feeding journey.
Signs Your Child
Could Benefit
Your child may benefit from a FEES procedure if they are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
🔹 Frequent coughing, choking, or gagging during meals
🔹 History of aspiration or pneumonia
🔹 Wet or gurgly voice after eating or drinking
🔹 Difficulty gaining weight or frequent respiratory issues
🔹 Refusal to eat certain textures
🔹 Concerns raised by your pediatrician or feeding therapist
What To Expect
During this simple and quick procedure, a small, flexible camera is gently inserted through your child’s nose while they eat or drink small amounts of food or liquid. This allows our team to observe and record how your child swallows in real time. The process takes about 15–20 minutes and is completed right here in our clinic. Afterward, we’ll review the results with you immediately and talk through what they mean and any next steps for your child’s care.
